1300 block of Pine Avenue. Kelly Miller, a 58-year-old apparent transient, died about 2 a.m. after a physical altercation, which caused a traumatic wound to the upper torso. According to the police, “the cause of that injury is still to be determined.” Nestor Guyal Tendido, 59, of Long Beach was arrested and is being held on $2 million bail on one count of murder, with a special allegation that he used a knife.

2296 Gaviota Avenue. At 2:44 a.m., a fire broke out in an apartment building and fully engulfed a unit. Police evacuated residents. An occupant was rescued from a bathroom in the burning apartment and was hospitalized in cardiac arrest. Originally thought to have died at the scene, Terry Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:25 a.m., Tuesday. Homicide detectives are investigating the incident with no arrests yet.

Pine Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. Someone in a group fired off some shots at 2:50 p.m. but apparently missed the intended target. Police cordoned off the area and arrested two people that the intended victim said were part of the group, leaving the motive yet to be determined.

Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. Less than a mile away from the previous shooting, at 4 p.m., a gunshot wounded a man in the upper body. He was taken to the local hospital, condition unknown. Police said the shooting may be gang-related.

1300 block of Wesley Drive. Also nearby, a man was shot in the upper body at 4:30 p.m. just north of Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus. He was taken to the local hospital, condition unknown. Police said the shooting may be gang-related.

700 block of Market Street. A 15-year-old Long Beach boy struck by a car was injured at 7:30 a.m. Transported to a local hospital, the boy was listed in critical but stable condition. The driver of the vehicle, a 2009 Ford Flex, Christopher Manuel Rodriguez-Inigo, 19, of Long Beach, stayed and cooperated with the investigation and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence according to a press release. “A department Drug Recognition Expert responded to the scene and determined that he was possibly driving under the influence of cannabis.” Police determined Rodriguez-Inigo was driving eastbound on Market Street when he struck the teenager, who was crossing northbound from the south side of Market Street mid-block between Lime and Olive avenues.

Junipero Avenue and Ocean Boulevard. In the early evening, a group of skateboarders took to Cherry Hill, which leads from Ocean Boulevard to the parking lot below Bluff Park in the first “Cherry Hill Glory Challenge.” The impromptu event was shut down by police, who dubbed it a “free item giveaway,” sending 100 spectators and participants on their way with no citations issued or arrests. In an Instagram video, about 15 skateboarders are shown skating through two police lines with little effort made to stop the fun. Then one of them tumbles. Still fun.

2200 block of East Burnett Street. At 9:19 a.m., a broken chemical oil pipeline caused road closures between Long Beach Boulevard and Locust Avenue and a response from the city’s fire and health departments. The hazardous material also required the response of the health department and a HazMat team. Police were also called to close down the street. There were no victims. Those with the requisite skills were able to “plug it up.” Coincidentally, reports of an odor were made around the same time nearby.

Tenth Street & Obispo Avenue. A 11:15 p.m. street-based armed robbery with the perp apparently getting two cell phones, two wallets and a set of car keys, if not the car.

1400 block of Chestnut Avenue. Responding to a midnight Beverly Hills mansion break-in, police tailed the suspect’s car in a 25-minute, 25-mile pursuit that ended at the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue in Long Beach. During the pursuit, items taken during the burglary were thrown from the car, including a purse. At pursuit’s end, the trio of purse tossing suspects lost, like the similarly titled movie, the Beverly Hill cops.

2700 block of Bellflower Blvd. At 11 p.m., a white vintage Mustang was doing several donuts near some fast food outlets, none of which normally serve donuts.

Seventh Street and Channel Drive. Just before midnight, a 1996 Ford Ranger driven by a 63-year-old Long Beach man struck a 57-year-old Long Beach man in a wheelchair as he attempted to cross Seventh Street. Police said the truck was traveling west and had a green light. The driver, who remained at the scene to render aid, had a valid driver’s license and his two passengers were uninjured. Police believe the pedestrian was attempting to cross against the “Don’t Walk” sign at the intersection.
